How To Love How You Look In Photos

In honour of upcoming National Selfie Day on June 21st, we wanted to share a few insider tips on how to love how you look in photos. We know that this is an area our customers (and folks of all sorts and kinds) struggle with on a near daily basis, and we want you to start LOVING your selfies. PS. Also see below for more details on how you can enter our Selfie Day Challenge for a chance to win a gift bag of Inception of Beauty products worth $150!

    SOME OF OUR TOP TIPS:

    1.) KNOW YOUR ANGLES

Practice by taking many different photos. You probably shouldn’t stare directly into the camera as most people don’t look their best straight-on. Turn to the side a little bit. Keep your chin down and the camera up. Try and hold the phone so that the bottom is level with your eyes or use a selfie stick for height.

2.) UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST CRITIC

Nobody notices the flaws you *think* you have. Always remember to smile. Natural expressions are the best, so are the freshest – so close your eyes right up until the moment you take the shot.

    3.) USE ILLUMINATING PRODUCTS

Highligher is perhaps the easiest and simplest answer to looking amazing in photos, and when paired with the correct lighting and angles, you will look brilliantly illuminated. For the best highlighting techniques, focus on your cheekbones, center of now, upper lip (center), and above your brow bones. We are currently working on a new collection of liquid highlighters and will be announcing their release soon!

You should also contour for photos, as this little trick goes a long way. You can use our Creme Contour – or to get the best of both worlds, try our Contour and Highlight Palette. Contour around the sides of your forehead, cheekbones, underneath your jaw line to amplify your gorgeous facial features in photos. If you want, you can also try contouring the sides of the bridge of your nose and highlighting the center of your nose to make your bridge appear skinnier and more defined.

4.) USE GREAT LIGHTING AND PROPER LIGHT ANGLES

Instead of facing your computer screen, turn toward a window with natural light. If you can, taking the photograph outdoors is better. Out door lighting can actually make under-eye circles and shadows totally disappear. You also never want to shoot into the light, meaning if you are taking a selfie, you would be standing facing the light, not with the sun at your back.

    5.) IMPLEMENT MODEL TRICKS

For full body, place one leg in front of the other popping that same hip, point the toe, and reach it as close to the camera as you can, to make your legs look longer. Always have your upper arm half an inch away from your body, otherwise it flattens against your side and looks unflattering in photos. Don’t stare directly into the camera for too long or your eyes might glaze over. Look away, or down at your toes, and then flash a bright glance at the camera.

The Essentials of Eyeshadow: A Guide to Contouring For Your Eye Shape

    eyeshadow blog

Eyeshadow contouring is now a thing. And we’re going to tell you all about it.

Whether you’re a liner, lash and go type, or a bold shadow fan, mastering the art of contouring your lids properly is a must, especially for when you want to go the extra mile for a night on the town.

Why? Understanding how to enhance your natural eye shape is like dressing for your body type. It’s always best to work with what you’ve got, and flaunt it.

First, start with a good neutral palette. We recommend one with enough options for all skin shades, so your best highlighting hues will be in the mix, whether your skin be in its summer or winter state.

    Define your eye shape:

Almond eyes: Apply a medium dark shade on the lid, and blend a darker hue into the outer crease. Blend well, and your eyes will be sure to pop.

Round eyes: To slightly narrow round eyes, do the opposite of the above technique and apply a darker shade to the centre of the eyes and lighter on the corners. Blend well.

Monolid: To create dimension in monolid eyes, build a gradient of darkest to lightest shade shadow. This will create depth.

Once you master the art of contouring, play with different colour combos. Brown eyes? Try a (subtle) emerald green combo. Blue? A brown colour combo will emphasize

  • The best way to clean your makeup brushes, in less than 3 minutes.

When was the last time you cleaned your blush brush? It’s been a while, hasn’t it? If you’re one of the few whose weekly routine includes a good makeup brush cleaning, we salut you, because we certainly find ourselves slacking in that department from time-to-time. Sometimes we even find ourselves wondering if we’re really even doing a good job. After all, your brushes are the heart of your beauty routine. They deserve a little love.

Here’s a quick guide to keep your face fresh, and your brushes clean as new.

How often do you need to clean your brushes? (Like, for real):

We like to spritz a little brush cleaner on ours after every use. Just like our girl Lauren Conrad, we prefer to use Sephora’s Daily Brush Cleaner. After applying your makeup, simply spritz and go. Once a week, however, we recommend giving them all a good cleaning to prevent product build-up and the unwanted bacteria that causes breakouts. When you draw yourself a candlelit bubble bath next Sunday, do the same for your brushes!

The benefits of cleaning your brushes regularly:

Bacteria, dirt, and oil can–and will nestle their way into the safety of your brush bristles. Get rid of ‘em all! To keep your face clean, keep your brushes clean. It’s that simple. Did you know? Cleaning your brushes regularly will also extend the life of the bristles and make for a better makeup application.

What is the best way to clean your brushes?

Use two tiny drops of your regular ol’ household dish soap, and about 1-2 minutes of your Sunday evening. Watch our beauty hack how-to video here to learn how we wash and dry our brushes in less than 3 minutes.

  • Rock Me Fabulous

    Happy 2018, beauties.

A lot has happened at IOB HQ, and we can’t wait to gush the gossip with you.

Last month, we released our Diamond Collection. What does that look like? Think luxuriously lightweight lashes and a silky soft (long-lasting) eyeshadow palette filled with colors and textures that cater to day-to-day, as well as glam nights out.

After that, we landed in print. Specifically, we landed in British Vogue’s skin care feature, Ready Set Glow.

Weeks after Vogue, we planted our feet firmly on the Red Carpet.

At The 60th Annual GRAMMYs ®, we featured our products in the official gift lounge, giving away 160 of our new Diamond Eyeshadow Palettes and 160 sets of Faux Mink Lashes. That means, celebrities like Lady Gaga and P!nk took home Inception of Beauty after Music’s Biggest Night ®. As a result, IOB appeared in publications such as Harpers Bazaar, and The Daily Mail. But we’re not resting yet. Our New Year’s resolutions are bigger and bolder than ever.

Don’t forget to check back in with us next month when we dish the dirt on the latest happenings at Inception of Beauty HQ.
